A few days ago, an OEM customer inquired about the price and asked us a question. He said he thought the quality was relatively good. Previously, he used motors from other brands that were heavier than ABB's. Later, he also used ABB motors. The weight of the 11KW4 motor was 130KG, but now the M2BAX replaced by the new model has the same power but weighs 110KG. It must be that the quality is getting worse and worse.

Huh? I looked confused as it was the first time a customer had measured the quality of a product by weight.

I compared the old models from the past with the current ones and indeed found that many of ABB's products are becoming lighter and lighter. Why?

ABB's products are mainly used in power pumps, fans, and transportation equipment, and are still used in these areas, but there have been many differences among end-users.

We will find that many products have been fully developed and improved, from meeting users' concerns about "what functions do they have" to becoming devices that can be used immediately, reducing the target of substitution.

So it is required that the product must be better installed, started, owned, and operated. Why are ABB motors becoming lighter in weight?

1. Requirements for miniaturization

Being able to demonstrate the simplicity and convenience of devices in multiple ways. For example, when the product is applied to industrial washing machines, it can develop towards a direction of small size, multiple functions, simple operation, and low price.

Small products are easy to install, reducing the use of some components, increasing assembly density, and advancing semiconductor and cooling technologies. As a result, the volume of the product has been reduced to one tenth of its original size.

2. Reduce costs

In the next few years, many ABB products will reduce the use of integrated electronic devices by about 20%, in addition to independent devices such as external flash memory, RAM memory, and analog-to-digital converters. Through integration, they can achieve more functions. In fact, the price of ABB's new M2BAX is indeed cheaper than the previous M2QA.

3. Improve cooling technology

The semiconductor devices in ABB motors have reduced the power loss per unit area of silicon wafers. More power can also be achieved, which satisfies the product's requirements with very small semiconductors while lowering the cooling standards inside the product. Smaller heat sinks and fans can be used internally.

4. Easy to maintain

An OEM needs to purchase 4000 AC products annually, so energy-saving installation and maintenance time are very important. For example, ABB's convenient installation system can achieve this. According to statistics, the debugging time for each product has been reduced by 15 minutes, saving 1000 hours per year. If an engineer works 2000 hours per year, it can save half of the engineer's workload.

Most people believe that ABB automation control should be applicable to all ABB products, such as their inverter control panels and so on. There is no need to spend time learning how to control and use every new product. So even though ABB motors are lighter in weight, the installation dimensions are in accordance with IEC European international standards, so there's no need to worry about that.
